2D and 3D Playability

Unlike many games that require players to buy brand new computer systems just to run, Ultima Online supports two different client technologies for play!

UO: Renaissance, the classic client, uses two dimensional sprite-based graphics, and has lower system requirements than our newer client, making it the ideal method of play for players without a 3D graphics accelerator. But for players with more recent and upgraded hardware, UO: Lord Blackthorn's Revenge, released in 2002, and UO: Age of Shadows, released in 2003, both offer a 3D client that takes full advantage of the latest systems, featuring motion-captured animations and brilliant spell effects.

Players can still interact with each other in either client, meaning that you can play the 3D client and hunt with someone playing the 2D client, or vice versa, and you'll both be in the same game world together. Both clients will be fully supported and regularly updated for the foreseeable future.

UO: Age of Shadows includes the full 2D and 3D versions of Ultima Online on the CD, so you won't need to buy anything else to play, and you can try out both versions to determine which works best for you!
